It is not only that Russian internet companies like sponsoring football clubs but also domestic internet investors like betting on online football ventures. Back in November 2006, LiveJournal-owner SUP Media acquired Championat.ru, then mostly a football site and now one of the leading online sports portals in Russia.
The venture capital fund Atlanta Start, which focuses on early-stage IT ventures and is managed by IQ One company, has acquired a blocking minority stake in Fabrika Futbola (Фабрика Футбола), a Moscow-based company that markets 3D online football game in Russia and neighboring states. The deal value was estimated at $0.4 million by StartupIndex.ru. The similar amount will be invested into product development and marketing of Fabrika Futbola.
Launched in 2008, the online football game Fabrika Futbola has 0.6 million registered users. The core user base is 15 thousand. The game currently generates revenues of more than $30 thousand per month. The name of the game is translated from Russian into English as “Football Factory”. To start playing the game, user has to download it from the web-site and purchase credits using online money or via SMS payment.
