Yandex, the leading search engine in Russia with 60% search market share in the country, has quietly released its popular online mapping service Yandex.Maps at its global search engine destination site Yandex.com. There is no link from its homepage yet. For now, Yandex.Maps is available, if visit directly, at maps.yandex.com.
It says that its route planner can only currently be used to plot routes in the U.S. There is no information about traffic. The views in satellite and hybrid modes are available.
The map data are from NAVTEQ, a subsidiary of Nokia.
Back in January 2012, Yandex agreed to license global digital map data from NAVTEQ. In Turkey, where Yandex holds 1% search market share, it began offering Turkish map services powered by NAVTEQ data in October 2011.
