Russian-Developed Desktop Virtualization VirtualBox Got Snaped By Sun

Having recently agreed to buy open source database software vendor MySQL for $ 1 billion, Sun Microsystems it would acquire , a Germany-headquartered provider of open source desktop virtualization software with software development team in Russia. Update: The rumored acquisition price was $60 million.

VirtualBox runs on various operating systems Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and OpenSolaris. Since its release in January 2007, VirtualBox was downloaded over 4 million times. The acquisition value was not disclosed. Innotek was funded internally before the deal.

The acquisition came soon after SWSoft, an international virtualization software company from Russia was renamed after its most well-known brand Parallels. is a competitor to VirtualBox.

Randall Kennedy of InfoWorld called the deal a ““. Here is why “… even more important is Sun’s recognition of Innotek’s commitment to developers. VirtualBox has long been the preferred solution for open-source programmers seeking to “roll their own” virtualization platforms.”
