Russian Internet Advertising Market Reached $590 Million In 2008

The online advertising market in Russia was valued at 14.7 billion rubles ($590 million) in 2008, up 55 percent from 2007, according to a from MindShare Interaction. The Russian contextual advertising accounted for 8.9 billion rubles ($357 million) or 60 percent of total online advertising spending, while display advertising accounted for 5.8 billion rubles ($233 million) or 40 percent of the total spending.

The online display advertising was up 46 percent from previous year. The biggest display advertisers were car makers (27 percent share of total spending), consumer good companies (22 percent), telecom companies (13 percent) and home appliance manufacturers (8 percent).

The contextual advertising was up 61 percent from previous year. The biggest contextual advertisers were construction companies (15 percent share of total spending), car makers (13 percent), industrial equipment makers (11 percent) and financial service companies (11 percent).

Yandex, which generated more than 85 percent or $255 million of its total 2008 revenues from contextual advertising, holds more than 71 percent share of the Russian contextual advertising market. Rambler Media, which owns 50.1 percent of Begun contextual advertising company, reported contextual advertising revenues of about $62 million in 2008, implying 17 percent share of the market. Google, whose revenues in Russia are estimated at less than $30 million in 2008, holds 8 percent share of the market share. The other 4 percent is held by some smaller companies.

MindShare Interaction expects that in 2009 the Russian online advertising market will grow 5 percent.
