Following a success in making Championat.ru the leading Russian sports site, LiveJournal-owner SUP has launched online football and sports TV site, Championat.tv. The popularity of football has surged in Russia. Zenit of St. Petersburg won the UEFA Cup in May 2008. The Russian national team won bronze medal in the European football championships in June 2008.
For the first time in the Russian Internet, the company signed an agreement with a satellite TV channel NTV-Plus for online distribution of the best moments from the football games of the Russian Premier League. This is the second online TV project for SUP, which recently launched online TV series ZhZh-Men (‘LiveJournal-Men’).
Championat.ru has over 2 million monthly users. SUP expects Championat.tv to reach 0.5 million monthly users by the end of 2008. The company also plans to add online broadcasting of the other Russian sports tournaments in 2009.
In April 2008, the other leading Russian Internet company Rambler became the official title sponsor of the Russian Football Cup for four years.
