If you can’t monetize your online traffic yourself, then bring in a guy who could replicate a previous successful experience in it. When the leading Russian social networking site Odnoklassniki.ru recently hired a new CEO, the market was wondering what he would do first. In fact, the answer’s easy. Previously, he worked at online dating platform Mamba.ru. Reportedly, less than 15% of Mamba’s revenues comes from online advertising on the site. The major revenue source’s ‘premium’ services, which registered users have to pay for.
Odnoklassniki.ru, which has over 22 million registered accounts and 6 million daily users, has introduced a payment for new users who would like to actively use their online accounts, reported TV channel Vesti. To be able to send messages or see other user profiles, the newly registered users have to pay about $1.3 via SMS message. The payment’s reasoned to fight spammers who capitalize on high site usage, according to Odnoklassniki.ru President/CEO Nikita Sherman
The other new ways to monetize social networking traffic that has been recently introduced by Odnoklassniki.ru via SMS payments include:
- $5 per month to become ‘invisible’ to see other user profiles;
- $4 per month to delete ratings of your photos made by other users;
- $4 to upload more than 100 photos to the site
Odnoklassniki.ru, which reported revenues of $3.3 million in the first quarter of 2008, was expected to generate $30 million revenue in 2008. According to TNS Web Index, Odnoklassniki.ru was number 3 site in Russia by monthly reach with 10.4 million users, after Yandex and Mail.ru
Meantime, Facebook moves into micropayments for gifts.
