Top Russian Web Apps and Sites of 2007

Quintura has put together a list of top web applications and sites of 2007 in Russia, the fastest growing online audience in Europe with 14.6 million unique visitors in September 2007. We selected both the winners and runner-ups in ten categories below. The major selection criteria was a number of regular users.

We named 2007 as the Year of Social Networks in Russia.

Social Networks



Created as a mix of Classmates.com and HOT or NOT in March 2006, Odnoklassniki.ru has become the largest social network in Russia and the 2nd most visited site in Moscow.



Started as a Russian copycat of Facebook, Vkontakte became a real time waster and online dating destination site for students and their friends in only one year from launch.

Blogging



Acquired by SUP from SixApart, LiveJournal (or “ZhZh” in Russian) is the most popular blogging community in Russia.



Being the fastest growing blogging community in Russia, LiveInternet attracts mostly young, under-20 users.
Online Dating



Having been acquired by RBC media group in early 2007, Loveplanet boasted the most aggressive advertising campaign in Russian Internet in 2007. This resulted in 8.5 million registered accounts in December 2007.



Being the Russian leader in online dating, Mamba is loosing its market to Loveplanet and social networks Odnoklassniki.ru and Vkontakte.

The most popular online mapping service from the leading Russian portal and search engine Yandex.



The online mapping service from Rambler, the second largest Russian search engine and portal.

The Russian copycat of Netvibes includes widgets, customization levels and versions for various handheld computers.



The light ajax-homepage for those users who like a simplicity.

Social news



The Russian clone of Digg has yet to reach mainstream audience.

Social bookmarking



Another site bought by the RBC Media Group, Memori.ru is a del.ico.us copycat meets Ma.gnolia.

Being the Russian answer to YouTube, RuTube is the largest independent online user-generated video sharing community with several hundred thousand daily users.



Being the fist billion dollar Internet company in Russia, Mail.ru has the largest video sharing portal in Russia that hosts both user-generated videos and entertainment shows and movies from regular TV channels.
