The Emerging Markets Group at Yahoo!, which leads the company’s expansion into new markets across the globe, has identified Russia among its top priority markets. Yahoo! is looking for two senior level full-time executives in Russia – General Manager and Head of Product Management. Both jobs are exclusively available via LinkedIn. According to business daily Vedomosti, the company is likely also recruiting some twenty sales managers to start selling advertisements directly.
Since November 2007, +SOL, a sales house of LiveJournal‘s owner SUP, has been exclusively selling display ads for Russian visitors on Yahoo!. The web portal has some 1.7 million visitors per month from Russia.
Yahoo! accounted for only 1.3% share of the Russian search market, behind Yandex (47.4%), Google (31.2%), Rambler (9.7%), Mail.ru (7%), but ahead of AOL (1.1%) and Microsoft (0.6%), reported comScore in April 2008.
Having struggled to gain a significant share of the Russian online advertising market, Google decided to acquire the Russian contextual advertising company Begun two weeks ago.
The question of what Yahoo! has learned from Google‘s experience of entering the Russian market remains open.
