Will Facebook Acquire Vkontakte?

Financial Times is reporting that the leading U.S. social network Facebook is suing the German social network, StudiVZ, for “copying the look, feel, features and services” of the Facebook site. PaidContent.org is asking if others will follow.

The leading Russian social network, Vkontakte.ru, which has 14.7 million registered users and 500 - 600 million daily page views, looks very similar to Facebook. Vkontakte has started selling display advertisements by signing an exclusive contract with Media Plus. The agency is owned by a leading Russian radio broadcasting group, part of Lagardere of France.

In spite of the fact that Facebook recently launched a Russian version, its name is not known in Russia. It would rather acquire its Russian counterpart to gain a sizeable share of the Russian online advertising market. Just like Google did by buying-out contextual advertising company, Begun, which is, in fact, very similar to MIVA.
